RUPPORT from the National Coal
Board secured the grant of a new B licence for an articulated low-loader in South Wales, on Monday. The application, by Short Bros., (Coals), Ltd., Aberdare, for a unit of 25 tons capacity, to carry excavators, bulldozers and earthmoving equipment within 25 miles of, Glynneath, was strongly opposed by B.R.S. (Pickfords), Ltd., and Robert Wynn and Sons, Ltd., Newport. Mr. Idris Owen, South Wales Licensing Authority, granted the licence for a radius of 20 miles.
Mr. T. D. Corpe, for the applicants, referred to the Border Engineering case where the Transport Tribunal allowed a B licence to a local operator. He said • that at the time the Tribunal coosidefed that it was advantageous for customers to have a low-loader close at hand.
In this case, Short Bros. were situated in the centre of three areas of the N.C.B. -They already supplied plant on hire to the Board and used their low-loader to transport it. The Board, who now had more plant and consequently required more transport, had no complaint against the services of Pickfords or Wynn.
Mr. Corpe explained that Short Bros. had shown that they could do the work for the N.C.B. and other customers at substantially lower rates than those charged by the objectors. Following the Wheeler case, it was in the public interest that the N.C.B. should be able to take advantage of this considerable saving. Evidence on operating costs and a memorandum, which gave a schedule"of recommended haulage charges, was presented by Mr. Ralph Cropper, consultant.
Mr. J. G. Short, managing director of Short Bros., gave an undertaking that he would adhere to • those charges if the application were granted. From documents su,bmitted by a representative of the N.C.B.. it was shown that the proposed charges would be substantially lower than those quoted by the objectors.
sayrnsH FARE APPLICATIONS MORE applications for fare increases are to be made in Scotland, W. Alexander and Sons. Ltd., will ask for
increases ranging from on single fares up to 5s. 11d., andfor ld.-5d. on return fares. Single fares over 5s. 11d. and return tickets will cost Id. in the shilling more, and increases in weekly and schoolchildren's tickets will be sought.
Higher fares for their Inverness town and other northern services will be sought by Highland Omnibuses, Ltd. The general increase in Inverness will be Id„ while from id.-4d. on single fares up to 4s. 11d., and from ld.-7d. on return tickets up to 6s. 3d. will be sought for other services. Single fares over 4s. 11d, will be raised by Id. in the shilling and a rise of Id. for every 10d. is proposed for those over 6s. 3d. Weekly and school tickets will be subject to percentage increases.
