• Foden will supply more than 400 trucks to the Ministry of Defence over the next four years in a contract worth £75 million. The first vehicles will be delivered early in 1994.
The 8x6 DROPS (Demountable rack off-loading and pick-up system) IMMLCs (Improved medium mobility load carriers) will be used by the Royal Artillery Powered by the Perkins Eagle 350 Mx military engine, drive is transmitted to the rear three axles via a ZF Ecomat 600 sixspeed automatic gearbox and ZF A800/3 transfer box. The front drive axle can be disengaged.
Michelin 20.5 x 25in high flotation tyres reduce ground pressure to improve cross-country performance. The 32.96-tonne Glelk. vehicles carry a payload of 15 tonnes. Approach and departure angles are 40° and 450, with a belly clearance angle of 125°. Foden claims axle articulation of ± 229mm; GKN axles and suspension systems are used. Overall length is 8.66m with an outer axle spread of 5.91m and overall width of 2.9m.
The vehicles will add an extra two trucks a week to Foden's build schedule at current rates of production.
