• Armed police are understood to he targeting HGVs at the seven 24-hour checkpoints set up round the City of London following the tipper truck bomb blast in April.
A spokesman for City of London police says that officers armed with machine guns are looking for large bombs, but he stresses: "We are looking at cars as well".
The disclosure comes as the IRA steps up its use of commercial vehicles to contain bombs: on Monday (5 July) the terrorists used a van to attack Newtownards, County Down. Belfast police have so far been unable to identify the make or type of vehicle.
E The Association of Chief Police Officers has distanced itself from calls from an unnamed police source quoted in the press this week to make the City cordon more effective by strengthening police powers to stop and search vehicles.
