• Plans to put multi-millionpound police vehicle service con• tracts out to tender have been plunged into controversy as police engineers accuse the Government of pursuing the scheme for purely political motives.
The engineers have argued that hard-won efficiencies in the police system, including the purchasing power associated with servicing 26,000 vehicles and the siting of maintenance depots within police compounds, will be swept aside by private contracts.
One senior engineer says: "I'm concerned about the future of police vehicle maintenance because we've spent 20 years getting it right. It's just political will." The Home Office stresses that 60% of maintenance will "be protected" from competition to ensure "secure handling".
