MAINTENANCE problems at four of London Country Bus Services' 24 garages led to the company appearing before the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioners when it sought to renew its psv operator's licence. The 0licence was renewed for the full five years.
Senior area mechanical engineer Frank Ashurst said that a five per Cent spot check of the company's fleet was carried out in January. Overall the standard was very good, hut at Garston, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and St Albans maintenance was unacceptable.
Area mechanical engineer John White said that the 12 vehicles examined front those four garages all received immediate prohibitions. Those vehicles accounted for 62 per cent of all the immediate items found and 53 per cent of all the delayed items.
There were also problems at Staines. These resulted from the high mileage — 9,000 a month — of airport buses, the cramped workshop conditions and the high rate of engine changes with 20 in 12 months on 38 vehicles, two of which had three engines in the 12 months.
Managing director Colin Clubb said the company was seeking a licence for 925 vehicles including 53 vehicles previously operated by National Travel London.
