THE GOVERNMENT has put off the i:45m scheme to improve the A20 between Folkestone and Dover, because of the possibility of a Channel fixed link.
A Department of Transport spokesman said: "We are deferring the decision for seven months, and that's not saying that there won't be any improvement."
The Government has asked fixed link promoters to submit their proposals for the link by October 31. It is waiting to see what the promoters suggest before any expensive changes are made to the road, she said.
The Government's opinion is that, with a fixed link, more traffic would use it rather than the road between and Dover, she stated.
And she said that "more recent progress on the fixed link" had meant that the Government had suddenly put off the building of dualcarriageways in both directions on the eight-mile stretch of road.
