LGVS THAT have not been itted with safety equipment to protect cyclists will be refused entry to Crossrail construction sites, according to the engineering irm.
In addition, contractors will be liable for any costs incurred if they are turned away, as the irm pushes ahead with measures to support Transport for London’s work to improve conditions for cyclists. LGVs are expected to have been itted with Fresnel lenses, side scan equipment, under-run guards and warning alerts for cyclists.
As CM went to press, Crossrail was unable to conirm how many main contractors it relies on, but says they have all given their “full support” to the strategy. It adds that more than 2,000 lorry drivers have received road safety training and that “a limited number of lorries” have already been turned away from its sites.
“LGVs that don’t comply with our requirements will be refused entry to our sites, incurring inancial cost to individual contractors,” says Crossrail programme director Andy Mitchell.
“As our contractors often work on multiple construction projects, these new safety measures will help improve lorry safety across the construction industry, delivering beneits for cyclists across London.”
