• Sixteen people have been arrested following an eight-day police undercover operation in North Yorkshire designed to catch thieves targeting vehicles parked overnight on the Al. The crackdown came after police discovered that curtainsided lorries at lorry parks and laybys were regular targets of criminals travelling down the Al from other counties.
"Operation Muvit" was successful in deterring criminals, says Detective Sergeant Pat McKee of Richmond Divisional Crime Support Team. "It was clear to us after the first night of the operation that word had quickly got round the criminal community further north, and that thieves were staying away." Over the four-week period, the Special Constabulary saturated lorry parks and laybys with leaflets offering crime prevention advice to lorry drivers.
