"war risk" surcharge of r-10p/kg has been added by &lines to cargo costs since 11 3eptember. Although this is paid o the airline by the exporter hrough the forwarding agent, it ioes not take a genius to see he potential knock-on for lauliers dealing in air cargo. "It • ;ould be a 10% increase in [air
freight] rates in some cases," a BIFA spokesman says. "Aircraft hull insurance has gone through the roof: the cost of insuring a 747 now is considerably higher than on 10 September. If the exporter is not getting orders, none of BIFA's members or CM readers is going to see an increase in business. And all these additional charges don't augur well for exporters."
A pre-11 September government report identified four main problems for air cargo hauliers: fuel costs, falling rates, increased buying power for airlines; and inconsistent information from customers leading to poor load utilisation.
You can now add terrorism to the list. As BIFA says: "The fallout costs from New York and Washington are going to reverberate through the commercial world."
