• The Oxford Concise English Dictionary defines a shop steward as "a person elected by workers in a factory to represent them in dealings with management".
Their role is to communicate information between the union and the workforce.
Legislation allows them reasonable time to perform their union duties and, if elf onto a negotiating coinmitt they should have access to necessary facilities (such i phones, a filing cabinet and photocopying) to enable thi to perform this role.
