Fanatical rail supporters aren't just found in the UK...
No matter where you go, you can't escape the world of road transport, as one of our number discovered on a recent trip to Brazil.
While sipping red wine in an Italian restaurant, a Commercial Motor staffer found that the road vs rail argument reaches as far as South America and that those in favour of rail are just as stubborn and narrow-minded whichever continent they happen to be on
OK, so the disagreement was between two Brits one of the them the CM expert, the other someone who just happened to think she knew best but it proves the point that you just can't get away from the issues that freight transport and congestion create.
The woman In question believed that all road freight should be switched to rail (although of course she had no idea how it would get from the rails to the shops); trucks should be banned from town centres on Sundays and all roads at peak times; and all UK operators should buy all their fuel in France.
While it's easy to laugh
at this level of naivety. here at CM we wonder
whether such Ignorance is widespread. If so, it might explain why politicians and civil servants come up with policies that sound so ridiculous to those of us who inhabit the real world.
