the effects of the recent custom officers' strike, judging by the latest freight statistics covering TIR truck movements. In August 64, 137 RU-RD vehicles passed through the port — up 8.1% on the same month last year.
After suffering a decrease in traffic at the beginning of the year, overall levels are creeping back up. In the eight months to August, 564,037 lorries used Dover — 5,600 (1%) more than in the same period last year.
According to Dover Harbour Board, more than 21.5 million is being spent every month at the port on new developments. In November a new import freight control building will open at Dover's Eastern docks. It is intended to speed up the processing of arriving freight traffic.
The 21 million project will be followed in December by the start of a four-lane overhead roadway system which will separate inbound and outbound traffic to increase traffic flow.
