• The Labour Party has committed itself to reverse bus deregulation.
At the party's annual conference in Brighton last week, delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of the party's national executive and the Trades Union Congress drawing up a 'passenger's charter' aimed at reintroducing a system of regulation, combined with extra investment in public transport.
The conference also backed a motion reaffirming support for public transport services as set out in Labour's 'Fresh Directions' policy statement.
The motion called on the next Labour government to introduce legislation to ensure properly funded rail services, and that 'proper weight be given to road transport in overall transport policy'.
The delegates reiterated their support for an integrated transport system.
This would entail the public control of all forms of transport, which they said would be in the interest of British industry as a whole.
