• Transport ministry officials have check-weighed 500 lorries entering Britain through Dover and other South Coast ports, following fears that overloaded vehicles could be travelling to this country regularly on crosschannel ferries.
The crack-down comes after a survey for the Sheen investigation into the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster revealed that goods vehicles arriving at Dover exceeded their declared weight by an average 13%.
The Department of Transport was collating the results of the latest survey as Commercial Motor went to press on Tuesday.
The use of public weighbridges sited close to particular ferry terminals to help stop overweight trucks using ROR0 ships has already been recommended to Transport Secretary Paul Channon by the British Ports Association.
