• Eurotunnel plans to subcontract a local haulier to handle the unaccompanied trailers which will be carried through the Chunnel when it opens in midDecember 1993.
It says it will be too busy managing the other traffic to deal with unaccompanied trailers, which will amount to around 7.5% of its 9m tonnes of freight traffic in the first full year of operation.
Eurotunnel, which does not have an operating licence, is talking to a number of hauliers. One of them is Hythe-based Laser Transport, which is about 8km (five miles) away from the Folkestone terminal. It owns 15 tractors and 70 trailers.
Eurotunnel says it would like to hear from other hauliers interested in the contract. They need to have a workshop and between 10-20 trucks.
