• Cummins Engines is to launch UK development trials with low-noise versions of its 5.9 and 8.3-litre B and C Series engines next year.
Among the modifications will be a plastic sump cover developed by the company's MidRange Technical Centre in Columbus, Indiana. If the trials are successful the plastic cover could become available in 1994. A batch of 20 low-noise B and C Series engines will be evaluated in the trials in a range of chassis. The lOmm thick plastic cover is glued over the sump. It is said to cut base noise levels by up to 7dB(A) and overall vehicle noise by ldEi(A). C Series chief engineer Sean Milloy says a complete plastic sump is also being considered.
Last month Cummins introduced a stiffer version of the C Series block which is also designed to reduce noise.
