• A device which prevents tyres coming off the rim following a blow-out is being demonstrated in the UK. The Tyron system uses a steel band to cover the well in the wheel thereby preventing the tyre from coming off.
The vehicle can be driven after a blow-out until a safe place is • reached to change the wheel. A tractive unit was driven for 4km on a test track at speeds up to 64kmh with the tyre totally deflated.
Unlike the Avon Safety Wheel. the Tyron system uses the standard wheels. Bands are available for wheels from 13" to 24.5" and weigh around 4kg each. Cost is around S:90 per wheel.
The company says that in addition to the safety factor the system will save the operator money as even after a blow-out the wheel rim and other equipment is undamaged.
