• A blitz on tax dodgers has been launched by the DVLA and the Vehicle Inspectorate in a bid to catch the 13,000 unlicensed HGVs which deprive the Exchequer of £23m a year. VI testing stations in Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and the West Midlands will now check that vehicles are displaying valid tax discs. If not, the DVLA will be alerted and if the VED is not paid within days operators could be fined up to £25,000 plus back duty and costs. The DVLA estimates that there are around 1,900 unlicensed HGVs in these six counties. During 1997/98 more than 4,000 operators across the country were

current tax discs: £2m was paid in fines and penalties. A DVLA spokesman says each HGV will also be checked to ensure it is properly insured and licensed.
