• Two Preston-based bulk tipper companies have joined forces in an attempt to survive the impending recession and escalating fuel costs.
The partnership between Walter Carefoot & Sons (Transport) and HF Gornall is expected to bring significant cost savings and reduce empty running. The merged company will be a member of the Carefoot Group of Companies which has an annual turnover of £20m, mainly from tipping, construction, property devel evel opment opment and financial services.
Dr Clive Carefoot, managing director of Walter Carefoot and Sons (Transport), says: "I have been in this job for a long, long time and I can see that the signs are there for a big recession. Only the pitbulls get through. I forecast a lot of hauliers will go to the wall with the increasing cost of fuel and late payment "I think that there is going to be a widening gap between the successful and those who fail," he adds. "Unless you get quality you cannot survive." The merger will create a combined fleet of 20 Scanias and Volvos; it is expected to generate five new driving jobs.
