• Central Railways has launched a £5bn scheme to build a rail link between Liverpool and northern France. It is designed to encourage international hauliers to send 40% of their trucks by rail: the average standby price for moving an artic from from Manchester to Lille is expected to be £360. But analysts are yet to be convinced. One says: "Whatever the social worth, no investors have any interest in funding a project like this." The company tried to build a similar link from the Midlands to France iwo years ago. The Piggyback Consortium, which wants to run from Scotland to France, is struggling to keep its scheme alive.
