It all began in Huddersfield

MUNICIPAL passenger transport in Great Britain is 100 years old. It began in 1883 with a steam tramway in Huddersfield, ..a town notable also for having been threatened with boycott by a furious coroner who received a ticket for parking his Mercedes in a place reserved for councillors' cars.
Although Huddersfield is unequivocally Yorkshire, its enterprise in transport is to be celebrated in South Wales in the summer. The seven municipal bus operators there are joining with the South Wales area of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society to stage two events.
One will be an exhibition depicting the history of South Wales municipal undertakings, first in Cardiff in June and July and then elsewhere. The other will be a suitably expanded version of the society's annual rally to be held on June 26 at Cardiff.
Ideas for a fitting celebration in 2082 of the coroner's outburst will be welcomed. An autopsy and inquest on a traffic warden at Madame Tussauds has already been rejected.
