• Mercedes-Benz will be presenting a new generation of lighter Unimog all-wheel-drive vehicles at the Hanover Show in May. The range comprises three models, the U 90, U 110 and U 140, with a new cab, hydraulic controls and a "Servolock" mechanism for securing accessories to the vehicle.
With the heavier U 1000-U 2150 models covering the 7,5-12.5 tonne GVW range, the new series looks set to take over from the smaller U 600s and U 900s which bridge the gap between 4.5 and 7.5 tonnes.
The U 90-U 140 models are powered by low-emission diesels developing between 64kW (86hp) and 102kW (137hp); lownoise versions are also available.
The lighter range also gets new power steering units and disc brakes all round with optional anti-lock; the hydraulic system uses bio-degradable oils.
To build the new Unimogs, Mercedes' Gaggenau plant has benefited from an 18m investment, with the middleweight U 110 and U 140 models going into production in July and the light U 90s in late autumn.
The lighter Unimogs are expected to reach the UK, but probably not before the end of the year.
