• Following redundancies in its distribution network, Tesco plans to expand its in-house operation by opening a major site in Wales.
A planned investment of more than £30m in a dry goods depot at Newport, Gwent would allow the company to build more stores in Wales, No planning application has been submitted for the Cardiff Road site favoured by Tesco and a planning decision is not expected for at least 18 months.
The Welsh expansion will not affect Tesco's existing distribution centre for fast-moving groceries at Westbury, Wilts, where the company employs around 350 staff. Two years ago the site was expanded to improve service to stores in South Wales and South-West England.
