He pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on 26 September, 1997. The court heard how veterinary surgeon Clive Shepherd had seen the Friesian cow on its arrival at Tutnall and noted that the animal's feet were "considerably overgrown and corkscrewed".
Joe Carter, senior animal health and welfare officer, says: "The Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order of 1997 places a clear duty on all persons who transport animals to ensure that they are fit for the intended journey."
