Barnard has beaten off competition from Exel Logistics, Lex Transfleet and Ryder Trucks to land a three-year contract worth £8.5m a year to transport medical and non-medical products for NHS Supplies Authority.
The four companies, along with Ilkeston-based haulier William West & Sons, used to distribute for NHS Supplies on a regional basis until the authority decided to move to a single distribution contract.
Taylor Barnard has already been working with NHS Supplies for 10 years.
The contract will last for at least three years, says Taylor Barnard, which will run 180 dedicated vehicles in NHS Supplies livery. A range of 18,000 products, with a value of £500m a year, will be distributed to major teaching hospitals, clinics and health centres. Up to 250 drivers will be transferred from the losing bidders to Taylor Barnard under TUPE regulations. There will be no redundancies and Taylor Barnard says that a few new jobs will be cre ated to serve the unified contract.
Andy Brown, head of operations for NHS Supplies' Wholesaling Division, says: "The single contract will save the health service around Elm a year in distribution costs."
