• by Colin Barnett A new company, Bus and Motors Commercial (UK), has been formed to import a new range of trucks and passenger vehicles into the UK and ireland. The choice of name is significant, as its initials form BMC, which just happen to be those of Its Turkish-built product.
BMC products are best known recently as the basis, before a change of badge, of ERF's FP6 range, which is now defunct since the Cheshire firm's new owner MAN arrived.
Under managing director Vic Wright, the new firm has appointed Marshall's of Cambridge to distribute bus products, and is currently selecting networks for trucks and coaches. The truck range will initially consist of 4x2 and 6x2 rigids, all powered by Euro-3 Cummins engines with other running gear sourced from ZF, Eaton, Allison and Rockwell. A range of off-the-shelf cab and body variants will be available, with the first examples arriving at the end of the year, BMC AS was formed in 1964 to manufacture British Motor Corporation products under licence at Izmir, and from 1983 assembled Volvo trucks for a time. Since 1985, it has also had a licensing agreement with Cummins.
