AN AUSTRIAN haulier has been jailed for seven years after he attempted to smuggle Lim worth of cannabis into the UK.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers searched WalterAichberger's vehicle at Hull's King George Docks in March. They found 40 cardboard boxes holding cannabis resin and herbal cannabis.
Aichberger subsequently pleaded guilty to smuggling.
Recorder Tahir Khan described Aichberger's involvement as "integral" to the smuggling plot; he decided the strength of the evidence called for a substantial jail sentence.
Khan added that Aichberger should serve at least half the sentence and then either be released or deported, John Houston for HMRC says: "Drug smuggling is a serious offence and the sentence today reflects that."
