Tipping Gear
Twin-ram End-operating Apparatus of 71 Tons Capacity and Sound Construction and Design
A NUMBER of desirable features
characterizes a new tipping mechanism that is now being produced by E.R.F., Ltd., Sun Works, Sandbach, Cheshire. It is of the hydraulic end-tipping type and is suitable for 7i-ton loads.
Lifting effort is provided by two hydraulic rams, spaced well apart, so that the reactionary forces are applied as near the frame side members as possible. Oil is fed to the rams by a four-plunger pump mounted on the side of the gearbox from which 'it is driven. This type of pump affords a smooth and rapid tip. The unit is brought into operation by an Arens control from the cab.
Neat design is evidenced in the hinge gear, the actual hinges being formed as units with the rearmost spring brackets. Two good features which promote stability result from this arrangement. The hinge points are remote from each other by the maximum practicable distance, and the body subframe is kept low.
The ram bases are supported in a strongly constructed swivelling cradle, carried by trunnions, the bearings of which are secured to the longitudinals. A ball joint provides a flexible connection in the pipe line from pump to rams. In this connection, the number of pipes employed has been kept down to a very moderate figure, and it is of note that all joints are of the-compression type.
As an example, one pipe serves two functions in the case of the hand. operated lowering valve, which is mounted in the cab, for with this is incorporated a pressure release valve.
Tipping-gear fluid is accommodated in a compartment of the main oil-fuel tank, an air space separating the two containers.
