• Another attack on a Vehicle Inspectorate employee has brought further pledges from the Vito provide greater security for their staff.
Traffic examiner Dave Horsley had his jaw and nose broken in the attack in Richmond, North Yorkshire, as he investigated an allegation of illegal parking of a truck. The assault comes just three weeks after two vehicle examiners were shot dead in Stockport.
Horsley was this week being treated in intensive care at the Duchess of Kent Military Hospital, Catterick. A man has been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident but he has not yet been charged. A spokeswoman for the VI said it took the safety of its staff "extremely seriously".
