ELEPHANTS ON PARADE
Back in April The Hawk drew your attention to the launch of Project Raja, a European initiative designed to maximise the breeding potential of captive Asian elephants.
On 9 November a specialist transporter which will play a pivotal role in the project was handed over by European logistics company Christian Salvesen to Woburn Safari Park. Edward Roderick, Christian Sahresen chief executive, is seen here (left) presenting the keys to Lord Tavistock at the park.
With each of the three elephants tipping the scales at around 15 tonnes, the purpose-built unit needed to be light enough for the vehicle to stay within the UK 41-tonne weight limit, but strong enough to safely contain the great beasts. Raising their trunks in approval, Raja and his two female companions, Chandrika and Damini, will be travelling in the trailer to animal collections throughout Europe to breed with other Asian elephants.
