Gregory Distribution is entering the booming waste transport sector by taking over a neighbouring operator in Devon.
Greendale Haulage specialises in transporting waste paper, cans and plastic. All its existing staff, which includes 30 drivers, are being transferred to Gregory along with 30 trucks and specialist trailers for carrying waste.
Its owners, FWS Carter & Sons, the farming, haulage and construction group, sold Greendale for an undisclosed sum.
Gregory's chief executive John Gregory believes the business has considerable potential because local authorities are required by government to increase recycling levels.
He says: "The Carter family have made the decision to sell the business in the belief that they have taken Greendale as far as they are able in terms of further investment in both equipment and depots, as well as the impending compliance with the Working Time Directive."
Greendale was established in 1978 and uses the slogan "Go Green — Go Greendale". It will retain the existing brand and continue to operate from its current base at Woodbury Salterton, near Exeter, as a separate unit within Gregory which operates more than 400 vehicles.
Dave Moore, general manager of Carter, says it will continue as a general haulier with a fleet of around six trucks.
