• The first four of a fleet of 40 Leyland Atlantean 85-seat double-deckers for Ulsterbus Ltd--its first rear-engined models—have now entered service in N. Ireland. The balance will be delivered over the coming year as part of a £250,000 order for 300 new vehicles. The bodies are being constructed in Belfast by Walter Alexander and Co (Belfast)-Ltd.
A spokesman for Ulsterbus said last week that it was a little early to assess reaction to the rear-engined, front entrance buses. "But first reactions seem to be favourable, and the staff seem to like the new layout and improved driving characteristics", he said.
The new vehicles are 33ft in length, and have semi-automatic transmission and power-assisted steering.
