• The future of Dawson International's in-house truck fleet looks uncertain this week, following a decision by the textiles manufacturer to cut its output.
The closure of yarn and knitwear factories at Galashiels and Berwick, as well as redundancies at Kinross, will affect the transport operation based at Galashiels, Borders.
The three sites currently provide up to 40°/0 of the work for the seven-truck fleet, which carries raw materials to the company's factories. But the full impact will not become known for at least another three weeks, says Dawson International transport manager Brian Riley.
The closures follow months of worry over the damage inflicted on the company by the strong pound and the increasing popularity of man-made fibres.
The Galashiels factory closes later this month, with the others following later. Riley fears that if any drivers are made redundant they will be hard-pressed to find jobs locally.
