days to go before the release of the Transport White Paper, which is designed to unclog UK roads, the Government has highlighted the problem of growing car use. The Department of Transport report Transport Trends shows a massive increase in car dependency. It reveals that the total distance travelled by car in 1996 was more than 10 times higher than 40 years ago. In 1953 buses and coaches were the most common form of transport: they now account for only 6% of UK journeys.
The report also snows that since 1970 the average roadfreight journey has risen by 65% to 89km, with arctics over 33 tonnes carrying 63% of goods and lighter arctics handling a further 11%, J A separate Government report shows that 91% of HGVs break the 50mph dual-carriageway speed limit.
