Glasgow Corporation has considered a communication from the Assistant Director of Supplies and Transport, Scottish Command, Edinburgh, regarding the provision of certain mechanical transport units in the event of mobilization of the Army.
The town clerk has reported in this connection that a mechanical transport unit has been established from the employees of the Edinburgh Tramways Department. It is now suggested that
the corporation might see its way to consent to the establishment, from corporation departments, of (a) a reserve mechanical transport company, Royal Army Service Corps ; and (b) mechanical transport repair unit, Royal Army Service Corps ; that the numbers of the two units would be approximately 9 officers and 308 other ranks, and 3 officers and 143 other ranks respectively, between the ages of 19 and 42. The total annual grant to the distributed would be £5,077 for the mechanical
transport tint and £2,671 for the repair unit.
The finance committee of the corporation has decided that the heads of departments be permitted to confer together as to the steps to be taken to bring the scheme before their employees, and, if necessary, with the Headquarters, Scottish Command, with a view to such men as desire to volunteer for service in the said units being afforded an opportunity of doing so in the near future.
