GooDs vehicle testing stations ready before the scheme starts in July 1968 will be staffed so that operators can voluntarily bring their
vehicles for test.
Announcing this in the Commons, Mr. Stephen Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, said operators would he able to gain experience of standards applicable to vehicles being tested and plated.
It was expected that most of the fulltime stations would be completed between next January and June, so that testing and plating of the heavier goods vehicles could start nationally in July.
Part-time facilities would be provided where the number of vehicles was insufficient to warrant a full-time station, and discussions were taking place with interested organizations on the siting of these facilities.
Mr. Swingler said testing stations were being prepared at Berwick, Newcastle, Carlisle, Darlington, Scarborough (Seamer), York (Walton), Skipton, Beverley, Leeds (Rothwell), Preston (Kirkham), Huddersfield, North of Manchester (Heywood), South of Manchester (Bredbury), Grimsby, Doncaster, Liverpool (Simonswood), Sheffield, Wallasey, Stone on Trent (Swynnerton), Northampton (Weedon), Sleaford (Spitalgate), Nottingham (Alvaston), Derby (Watnall), Shrewsbury, Norwich, Leicester, Downham Market, Peterborough, Wolverhampton (Featherstone), Birmingham (Garrett's Green), Royston, Worcester, Ipswich, Luton, Gloucester, Bicester, Chelmsford, Edmonton, Purfleet, Yeading, Mitcham, Newbury, Canterbury, Gillingham, Guildford, Battle, Southampton (Botley), Lancing, Isle of Wight, Bristol, Caine, Salisbury, Taunton, Exeter, Bournemouth (Poole), Plymouth and C ambome.
In Scotland there would be stations at Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth, Edinburgh (Livingston), Glasgow and Kilmarnock, and in Wales at Wrexham, Ammanford, Pontypool and Llantrisant.
