TRUCKPOL HAS warned that following a brief hiatus, a gang targeting firms delivering into the Docklands area of London is back at work.
This follows an attempt to divert a 1.1.2m load of golf equipment to an address previously used by criminals. Calls were made to the shipper, carrier and importer of the equipment trying to get the delivery switched to a location in E16.
DS Mark Hooper from TruckPol reports that a member of staff became suspicious and reported these attempts to her supervisor. During subsequent calls, including several where the caller imperson ated police officers, the attempted theft was uncovered.
"Operators should remind all staff to be extra vigilant when discussing freight movements as this lot will almost certainly try again," says Hooper. Any suspect calls, including those from people purporting to be police offiters, should be verified by calling back to a landline or via e-mail. Genuine callers will not object to this.
"In addition, drivers must be told not to accept instructions to trans-ship loads to another vehicle, no matter how legitimate they appear."
