SENTENCES
ailhougn the metropolitan Police Stolen Vehicle Unit is to be warmly congratulated on tracking down the East London truck thieves (CM2-8 March) and putting them out of commission, it's a pity the sentencing policy of Croydon Crown Court doesn't carry it through with the same vigour. While the boys in blue are getting to grips with the problem, the handing down of sentences averaging just over two years is ridiculous. With the usual good behaviour and parole rules. these crooks could be back in action in time for the Christmas rush.
Now that the BVRLA is campaigning for increased commercial vehicle security and truck makers like Mercedes-Benz are incorporating immobilisers and other kit to foil the villains in their standard specs, the industry has a right to expect the courts to send a stronger message when organised gangs are caught.
