DRIVERS EMPLOYED by removals giant Pickfords have emerged unscathed from a cost-cutting restructuring programme.
Union leaders were bracing themselves after being called to a meeting with bosses from the company's US-based parent group Sirva on Friday (3 March). But redundancies will be confined to management.
Roy Abrahams, divisional officer for the United Road Transport Union, which represents 70 drivers, says they are now set to receive their first pay rise for two years: -The pay offer was pretty well received by the negotiating committee, taking into consideration the company is in difficult trading circumstances." • The Transport & General Workers Union is still negotiating over the proposed scrapping of final-salary pensions for 1,000 of its members in the Co-op.
A consultative ballot showed strong opposition to a replacement 'career-average' scheme, but talks with management have so far averted a ballot on industrial action.
