M A tanker driver working for P&O Trans European claims there is a new mood of militancy among his colleagues following their rejection of the company's pay offer.
The deal offered to more than 400 drivers working on the Shell contract is worth up to 2% and involves a number of changes to working hours (0425 April-1 May).
The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, says: ''Our basic rate of pay is £23.560 for a 45-hour week, and that includes Saturdays and Sundays. We're very much at the bottom end of the scale when some tanker drivers are achieving up to t39,000."
He says terms and conditions have worsened since Shell contracted the work out three years ago and the mood of militancy among drivers has been heightened since the fuel protests of September 2000. "They could see what could be achieved by taking action," he adds.
Ron Webb, Transport 45, General Workers Union national secretary for road transport, says he is still awaiting the company's reaction to the overwhelming rejection of its offer. "I think there's a large amount of frustration among our members at the delay in concluding these negotiations," he warns. The union wants the drivers' salaries to increase by at least 8%.
