• New high-tech message signs are to be piloted on the M4 in Berkshire. Work started this week to install the 36 variable message signs—known as Motorway Signal Mark 4 (MS4) signs—between Junction 12 at Theale and Junction 14 at Hungerford. They differ from current models as they use a high-resolution matrix display that allows them to display pictograms, mixed-case text messages as well as warnings of speed limit and lane closures. The MS4 signs can show messages in red and white.
Although they are designed to cut congestion, their installation will involve 18 months of hard shoulder closures between Junctions 12 and 14. The pilot is expected to last until August 2003; the total scheme is set to cost £16m.
