• HM Customs 8.6 Excise has unveiled a large-scale X-ray scanner which should significantly reduce the time taken to search trucks.
The scanner will be minaly used to detect cigarette smuggling, but it can also spot drugs arid illegal immigrants.
The first will be based at Tilbury docks; four more will follow at ports around the country. A Customs spokesman says scanning a trailer will take only minutes.
