• Traffic was brought to a standstill on the M1 in South Yorkshire last week after a five-truck pile-up left a cargo of nails strewn across the carriageway.
The northbound motorway was shut for almost five hours as rescue services battled to rescue a driver and clear the debris. Two ambulances called to the scene suffered punctures after running over nails.
The incident happened at about 12:00hrs on 2 November near Junction 37 (Dodworth), when a vehicle broke down in the nearside
lane. Another truck stopped behind it, and wae hit by a third vehicle. As the stranded trucl, was being moved a fourth truck clipped it— pushing it into the path of a fifth vehicle.
Police refused to speculate about the cause of the accident, but locals say visibilit) was poor at the time.
A driver for Nottingham-based J Beardsley one of those involved, was trapped in the cat of his MAN tractor for an hour. He was taken tc Barnsley District General Hospital suffering e broken leg, dislocated hip and facial iejuries.
