One of the biggest problems for drivers is the shortage of rest areas on Czech motorways, with drivers causing an growing number of accidents as a result. There are only 1,233 parking places, and with more than 14,000 vehicles on the roads on Friday afternoons, this number is insufficient, experts say.
"There are few rest areas and the police take an uncompromising stance against drivers who break driving time laws," Vladimir Hof irek, a driver from the town of Bohunovice, says, He
adds the police don't care drivers are prevented from resting because areas are already full.
Although providing haulage services abroad can double a family's monthly income, the strengthening of the Czech crown against other European currencies causes problems to drivers. Hauliers, who agree rates with clients months ahead, have been hit by the trend and some Czech and international firms are considering moving to Slovakia, which is expected to adopt the Euro next year.
