TEN new Leyland National buses in the St Helens fleet of the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive are being fitted with radio communication so that drivers can call for help if they are attacked by thugs.
Calls will be received at the PTE's radio control unit in Liverpool, and help will be on the way within seconds.
And there are plans to equip another 20 of the older single-deckers with radio, The move follows representations from the Transport and General Workers' Union which has expressed concern about assaults on drivers on late evening journeys.
Frank Lavelle, secretary of the St Helens branch, said the radios would enable drivers on one-man buses to do their jobs "without fear of being thumped.",
