THE new Jones 20-ton mobile crane is more than twice as big as any previous model. This was claimed by the manufacturers, K. and L. Stecifounders and Engineers. Ltd.. at a demonstration at 'Letchworth last week. Designated Jones KL 12-20 M. it is the first of a series of three 20-ton Cranes to go into production. The other two are either lorryor rail-mounted.
On British Standards rating this mobile crane lifts 20 tons with outriggers extended or 12 tons freeon-wheels, in both cases at 10-ft. radius. The standard jib is 30 ft. long and at 30-ft. radius loads of 'tons and 21 tons respectively are permissible. With standard jib the crane weighs 26 tons. Optional equipment includes single or double drums for grabbing purposes. whilst a self-contained generating set with control gear can he fitted to operate an electro-magnet.
Two-wheel drive is standard on the mobile model, but four-wheel drive is available. Steering is hydraulic and the front axle is articulated. The crane can travel at 8 m.p.h., or a recommended .2 m.p.h. when carrying a full load, and gradients of 1 in 5 can be negotiated.
Hydraulic control provides sensitive slewing operation at speeds up to 21 r.p.m. Full loads can be lifted at 20 f.p.m., 7 tons at 60 f.p.m. and 31 tons • at 120 f.p.m.
The power unit is a Perkins Four 270D oil engine developing 62.5 b.h.p. The lorry-mounted version employs a Foden FC 20 six-wheeled chassis with Gardner 6 LX engine and five-speed gearbox giving road speeds up to 20 m.p.h.
During a demonstration of the flexibility and manceuvrability of the mobile crane, the low controlled hoisting speed of 1 in. per minute with a 20-ton load permitted a beam to be suspended alongside another so precisely that a rod could be passed through adjacent holes with only in. clearance.
NEW SCANIA-VABIS BUS
A NEW integral bus has been introduced by A.B. Scania-Vabis, Sodertalje. Sweden. It is known as the CE 75 and is similar in basic design to the same company's Metropol and Capitol buses, but is powered by the new Scania-Vabis 165 b.h.p. oil engine. • The bus is rated for 75 passengers, including 46 seated, and has a four-speed synchromesh gearbox, power steering and air brakes.
COMMER POWER TAKE-OFF
DES1GNED to transmit up to 20 b.h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m., a power take-off is now available for use with the Commer five-speed gearbox.
