MAN-VW has developed a fully encapsulated engine for noise reduction in urban distribution vehicles.
The radiator, fan, engine and transmission are encapsulated, with the upper part of the capsule being formed by the cab which has had an absorption layer incorporated.
The cover for the clutch and gearbox is fitted to the frame. The lower part of the capsule consists of two floor 'tubs' made of glass fibre reinforced material, a front spoiler under the bumper and a scoop in front of the radiator.
A specially developed fan is incorporated in the system which ensures that the capsule is fully ventilated.
MAN-VW claims that the allround noise level drops by 8 to 9 dBA compared with an unencapsulated vehicle, with the interior noise being improved by 2 to 3 dBA. On the EEC pass-by test the in-cab noise has been lowered from 86 to 79/80 dBA.
The entire "noise package" weighs 35 to 40 kg (77 to 88 lb) according to the particular model.
The engine is still accessible from the top when the cab is tilted, while, for work on the underside, the two shells forming the lower part can be easily taken off and refitted. There is no need to remove any panels to change the oil.
