• Calais port officials discovered 700 illegal immigrants on board trucks bound for the UK in July—the first month of a security crackdown ordered by the French government.
Most stowaways were detected using carbon dioxide probes. Visual searches and vibration detectors were also used.
Approximately one in five trucks are receiving optional free checks which take a couple of minutes to complete.
The £4m security crackdown by Calais Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which administers the port, involves establishing an in-house security team, erecting new fences, and tightening up access control to the entire port (CM 20-26 July).
