• A trucker was travelling too fast when he hit and killed a pensioner as her car pulled out of a country lane near Castle Howard, a Yorkshire inquest was told last week.
The North Yorkshire East Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on Winifred Boatfield, 73, of York who was killed instantly in the crash at Coneysthorpe crossroads on the Slingsby to Welburn road. Truck driver Christopher Jemminson of Kirkbymoorside told the inquest that his empty M-registered Foden 3325 had been travelling at about 50mph as it approached the junction on 15 March. The car pulled out in front of him and he was unable to avoid a collision. He said that Mrs Boatfield appeared to be trying to shade the sun with her hand.
Police said the lorry's tachograph showed it had been travelling at 53mph. Constable David Foster said: "There would have been sufficient time for Mrs Boatfield to get out of the junction if the lorry had been travelling at 40mph."
