THE JOHN BROWN engineering group, whose subsidiaries include Craven Tasker, Boalloy, and East Lancashire Coach Builders, has moved its head office from The Sanctuary in Westminster to the sixteenth floor of John Brown House in Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington, and reduced the number of head office staff from 40 to 19. The Paddington building has housed the main office of the group's engineering and construction sector for many years.
It is estimated that the move will save John Brown around £0.5m next year in overhead costs. Last year the group lost £8.6m on a turnover of £644m, which compares with the previous year's profit of £14m on a turnover of nearly £681m.
A new managing director, Allan Gormly, was appointed in July at the same time as Sir John Cuckney took over as nonexecutive chairman from Sir John Mayhew-Sanders, who was both chairman and chief executive. The John Brown group currently has around 9,000 employees in the UK.
